No. 20 Women’s Water Polo Cruises Past Mercyhurst, 15-4

– The No. 20 Harvard women's water polo team won the first of two contests this weekend with a 15-4 win over Mercyhurst Saturday evening. Ten different Crimson scored in the game, led by a trio of goals from senior Zoe Osborne.

Harvard (9-9, 0-1 CWPA) took control of the match from the start against Mercyhurst (3-11), using lockdown defense to open an eight-goal lead (10-2) at the half. The Crimson continued to extend its lead in the second half with a balanced attack that outscored the Lakers, 5-2, to earn the double-digit victory. Harvard has now held its opponent to single digits in 13 games this season.

The Crimson jumped out to a big lead over Mercyhurst, using two goals each from sophomore Kristen Hong and Osborne in the first half to take a commanding 10-2 advantage over the hosts. Sophomore Haley Bowe, senior Eela Nagaraj, junior Sami Strutner and freshmen Sofia Carrera-Justiz, Lana Gorlinski and Mathilde Ribordy all tallied goals to give the Crimson the eight-goal cushion.

Ribordy opened the scoring in the second half with her second tally of the game, while freshmen Angie Varona and Julie Harrison also notched goals for the Crimson. Osborne collected her first hat trick of the season with a late score, and Carrera-Justiz tacked on her second goal against the Lakers to cap off the scoring for Harvard.

Junior Cleo Harrington and sophomore Sam Acker split duties in net, as Acker had five saves and Harrington collected a pair. Harrington also dished out three assists to go along with a steal in the contest. Nine different Crimson had assists, led by a pair from senior Michelle Martinelli, Carrera-Justiz and Hong.

Harvard will be back in action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. for a matchup with Gannon at Mercyhurst.
