No. 20 Women’s Water Polo Tops Fresno Pacific, 14-4

FRESNO, Calif.
– The No. 20 Harvard women's water polo team cruised to a 14-4 win over Fresno Pacific on Tuesday night. The Crimson moved to 2-2 on its West Coast road trip with three contests remaining this week.

Harvard (7-7, 0-1 CWPA) dominated from the opening sprint against Fresno Pacific (12-7), taking a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and a double-digit lead by the end of the third period. Nine different Crimson scored, led by three goals from freshman Sofia Carrera-Justiz and a pair from senior Michelle Martinelli, sophomore Kristen Hong and freshman Mathilde Ribordy.

Senior Zoe Osborne and Martinelli paced the offense with two assists each, as the seniors assisted on the opening two goals to jumpstart the Crimson attack. Sophomore Haley Bowe got the scoring started for Harvard, and Ribordy added one of her two goals to follow her teammate and take a 2-0 lead. Senior Eela Nagaraj, Hong and Osborne closed out the scoring in the first frame to make it 5-0.  

The Crimson extended its lead to 9-1 at the intermission, highlighted by a goal from freshman Lana Gorlinski and two assists from sophomore goaltender Sam Acker. Acker collected a team-high four assists in net, while stopping nine shots to go along with three steals.

The second half belonged to the Crimson as well, outscoring the hosts 5-3 over the last two quarters. Junior Sami Strutner found the back of the net at the end of the third quarter and Carrera-Justiz scored two late goals to cap off the 14-4 win for Harvard.

Ribordy led the defense with three steals as the Crimson posted 15 steals against Fresno Pacific. Osborne and Martinelli notched two swipes apiece.

Harvard will return to the pool tomorrow, March 15, for a 9 p.m. EST contest at No. 9 Pacific.
