No. 18 Women's Water Polo Downs No. 21 Hartwick, Falls to Bucknell

PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 18 Harvard women's water polo split a pair of CWPA contests Saturday at DeNunzio Pool, topping No. 21 Hartwick, 12-11, before falling to Bucknell, 7-6.

Harvard's triumph against Hartwick broke the single-season program record with its 21st win of the season.

Harvard 12, Hartwick 11

Michelle Martinelli and Melissa Balding each netted four goals apiece, while Yoshi Andersen tallied a pair to lead the offense. Cleo Harrington posted nine stops in net.

Martinelli and Balding each snapped the back of the net in the opening frame to put Harvard ahead, 2-1, at the end of the first. The Hawks evened the game to open the second period until Zoe Osborne and Andersen tallied back-to-back scores to put the Crimson back on top, but the Hawks tied the game up at four all heading into the break.

Harvard and Hartwick battled goal-for-goal in the third period as Martinelli tabbed a pair, while Balding and Kristen Hong found the back of the net to tie it up at 8-8 heading into the final frame.

The Hawks opened the fourth with three-straight goals to hold an 11-8 advantage with 3:52 remaining. The Crimson answered as Balding scorched back-to-back goals, while Martinelli also registered her fourth of the game before Andersen deliverd the heroics against the Hawks the second time this season, delivering the go-ahead goal with 1:27 left as Harvard held on for the win. 

Bucknell 7, Harvard 6

The Bison took a 3-1 lead after the opening period and fended off Harvard's comeback attempts to down the Crimson, 7-6, in its final game of the day. Balding and Martinelli paced the attack once again as each registered a pair of goals and Harrington haunted nine shots in net.

Balding tallied the lone goal of the opening period as Bucknell claimed the early 3-1 advantage. Osborne and Martinelli put Harvard within one as the Bison held the upper hand, 4-3, at the half.

Martinelli and Charlotte Hendrix tied the contest at 6-6 at the end of the third, but Bucknell pulled away in the fourth to hand Harvard its fourth CWPA loss.

Harvard will close out its regular season tomorrow against George Washington at 1 p.m.
