Women’s Tennis Extends Win Streak With 4-1 Win Against Memphis

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's tennis team (12-5) earned its fourth-straight victory on Sunday against Memphis (8-8), 4-1, at the Murr Center Courts.

"I'm so proud of the grit and determination from top to bottom today in singles and doubles," said The Sheila Kelly Palandjian Head Coach for Harvard Women's Tennis, Traci Green. "Memphis came at us with the kitchen sink and our players responded really well. We will look to keep building this week in practice as we head into Ivy play."

The Crimson was just edged in the doubles point, despite the top pairing of senior Erica Oosterhout and junior Natasha Gonzalez defeating Laura Bente and Alisha Reayer, 6-2.

Harvard came alive in singles play with four-straight victories. The Crimson's No. 2, junior Jenna Friedel, bested Bente, 6-4, 6-1. First-year Rachel Lim took care of business as the team's No. 3, coming out on top over Aleks Topalovic, 6-2, 6-4. Junior Natasha Gonzalez continued her strong tennis as the team No. 4. She took down Hannah Davies, 6-2, 6-4. The Crimson's fourth point was earned by first-year Rachel Eason, who battled to a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Katherine Chao.

Harvard Highlights:

  • The Crimson earned a victory in the program's first meeting with Memphis. 
  • Oosterhout battled back after losing the first set and was up, 4-6, 6-2, 5-0 when play was stopped.
  • Gonzalez continued her winning ways, adding to her team leading 11 wins.
  • First-year Rachel Lim has won her last five matches in the lineup for the Crimson.
  • Harvard has won six of its last seven matches and currently is riding a four-match win streak.

Up Next:
The Crimson will look to use its non-conference momentum in Ivy League play, beginning Saturday against Dartmouth at 2 p.m. at the Murr Center Courts.

Following the game, the Harvard Women's Tennis team hosted a clinic for local kids eighth grade and younger.
