Women’s Tennis Ends ECAC Tournament With Win Against Cornell, 4-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Harvard women's tennis team beat Cornell, 4-1, in a Sunday morning matchup to close out the ECAC Tournament. The Crimson finish seventh for the tournament.

"Total team win today against a tough crew from Cornell," said The Sheila Kelly Palandjian Head Coach for Harvard Women's Tennis, Traci Green. "I'm very proud of our team growth from the weekend. We will look to keep building next week as we prep for our next competition."

Harvard began by earning the doubles point. Senior Erica Oosterhout and junior Natasha Gonzalez defeated Valerie Ho and Mariko Iinuma, 6-3, at No. 2. The doubles point was later clinched by junior Jenna Friedel and first-year Rachel Lim, who clinched the point with a 7-5 victory over Katherine Nguyen and Sarah Campbell at No. 1.

The Crimson continued to play well in singles action, where it took the first point thanks to Gonzalez's victory against Ho, 6-1, 6-2, at fourth singles. Friedel, Harvard's No. 2 singles player, added her second win of the day by taking down Iinuma, 6-2, 6-1. Oosterhout, meanwhile, cliched the match for Harvard at the top of the order with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Nguyen.

Harvard Highlights:

  • The Crimson have had great success in doubles play this season, winning the doubles point in eight of the team's nine matches.
  • Harvard extends its all-time record against Cornell, 39-5.
  • Upperclassmen Oosterhout, Friedel and Gonzalez led the way earning victories in doubles and singles play.

The Crimson will return to Cambridge for a week of training before heading to No. 23 Syracuse for a Sunday morning matchup.
