CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 49 women's tennis team fell short to Penn in the regular season finale, 4-3. The Crimson (17-8, 5-2 Ivy) earned a share of the Ivy League crown during yesterday's victory, and will share the honors with Dartmouth and Cornell.
Erica Oosterhout and June Lee took the reins in the first position of doubles, downing Kana Daniel and OJ Singh, 6-2. Lexi Milunovich and Natasha Gonzalez were challenged in the second position, falling to Ria Vaidya and Ashley Zhu, 6-0. Tied at 1-1, Harvard relied of efforts from Sabrina Xiong and Annika Ringblom to clinch the doubles point. Xiong and Ringblom earned the victory against Luba Vazhenina and Marta Kowalska, 6-3.
Moving onto singles action, Oosterhout faced Daniel in the first position, falling 7-5 in the first set. Oosterhout fought back to win the second stanza, 7-5, to force a decisive third set. Oosterhout bolted out to lead Daniel and never looked back, taking the set, 6-4. Oosterhout ends the season with an 18-9 overall record, including a 5-2 mark against Ivy opponents.
Harvard sent Lee to compete in the second slot against Vaidya. Lee kicked off her opening set with a 6-3 victory, and continued on her four-match winning streak by beating Vaidya, 6-2, in the second frame. Lee ends her senior campaign with an impressive 24-14 mark, including an undefeated record in the first singles position.
Though Milunovich kept pace with Zhu in the third position, she was unable to secure the point, falling 7-6, 6-2. Jenna Friedel fell short to Lina Qostal in the fourth position, 7-5, 6-1. In the fifth position, Ringblom took control of the first set, 6-3 against Sarah Dreyfuss, but fell in the tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3. Irene Lu saw action in the sixth slot against Kowalska, but was unable to push past the Quakers, falling 6-3, 6-3.
Harvard concludes their regular season ranked No. 49 in the country, the highest ranking for the Crimson since the 2009 season. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced May 2-3.
