Harvard Women's Tennis Rebounds, Storms Past Maryland, 6-1
Hideko Tachibana earned wins in her singles and doubles match Saturday afternoon for the Crimson (Harvard Athletic Communications).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Harvard women's tennis team bounced back from a pair of setbacks last weekend with a decisive, 6-1, win over Maryland Saturday afternoon inside the Murr Center.
The Crimson jumped out to an early lead and never looked back to improve to 2-2 on the year, while Maryland fell to 2-2 after dropping its second match of the weekend.
Harvard took control early in doubles action, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in each contest. Harvard's No. 2 tandem of Sylvia Li and Amanda Lin used that momentum to roll past Sarah Gealer and Gabriela Srodowski, 8-1, to give the Crimson an early advantage.
Senior co-captain Hideko Tachibana and junior Hannah Morrill held off Nataliya and Olga Bredikhina, 8-6, to lock up the doubles point and give the Crimson an early lead.
In singles play, Norton, a senior, breezed past Maryland freshman Olga Bredikhina, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2, while He only lost three games, as well, in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gaistruk to put the Crimson on the verge of clinching the match.
Maryland got within 3-1 on the scoreboard; however, the Crimson outlasted the Terps in the final three matches to lock up the win.
Hideko Tachibana posted a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 come-from-behind win over Van Berlo at No. 1, while Li knocked off Gealer, 6-2, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (1), and Lin edged Bredikhina, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-2.
The Crimson returns to action Saturday against Buffalo and Massachusetts at the Murr Center to continue its nine-game season-opening homestand.
