Fall Season Ends for Women’s Tennis at ITA Northeast Regional

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two Harvard singles players and a pair of doubles teams reached the fourth round at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championship held in New Haven, Conn. Oct. 21-24. The tournament featured the top Division I women's tennis players from the Northeast vying for a spot in the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.

Six Crimson singles players entered the tournament and all advanced to at least the second round of the main draw.

Sylvia Li and Sam Gridley were placed in the singles qualifying draw where both won two matches to reach the main draw. Li trumped Aleksandra Pavlovic (LIU), 6-3, 6-3, and Jana Luste (NJIT), 7-5, 6-3, while Gridley downed Emma Whitfield (Penn), 6-4, 6-0, and Jackie Raynor (Quinnipiac), 6-2, 7-6 (2).

Li and Gridley continued their runs with wins over Polina Movchan (Stony Brook), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and Jennifer Holzberg (Rutgers), 6-2, 6-4, respectively, in the first round of the main draw while four Crimson players received byes.

Camille Jania and Kristin Norton led Harvard's singles charge by advancing to the fourth round. Jania defeated Jessica Linero (BU), 6-3, 6-4, and No. 10-seed Augustina Sol Eskenazi (Penn), 6-4, 6-2 before falling to No. 7-seed Vicky Brook (Yale), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Norton, the tournament's No. 12 seed, beat Adel Arshavskaya (Columbia), 6-0, 6-0, and Abby Liu (Hartford), 6-0, 6-4, prior to dropping a 6-1, 6-0 decision to No. 5-seed Erina Kikuchi (BC).

Harvard entered three doubles teams in the main draw and all won first-round matches in dominating fashion. Kristin Norton and Hideko Tachibana were victorious by a four game margin, Camille Jania and Alexandra Lehman shutout a Hartford duo, 8-0, and Kelly Whelan and Hannah Morrill won an 8-1 decision.

Norton and Tachibana, the tournament's top seed, and Whelan and Morrill won two more matches apiece – including wins over two fellow Ivy League teams – to advance to the fourth round. Harvard's top pair downed Janet Liu and Rachel Decker-Sadowski of Dartmouth, 8-3, while Whelan and Morrill beat Lauren Frazier and Gabby Sullivan of Cornell, 8-1, in the third round.

The fourth round was not as friendly to the two remaining Crimson combos as both dropped matches to teams from Yale.

The Northeast Regional rounded out Harvard's fall tournament lineup. The Crimson will return to action after the calendar turns to 2012 for the spring dual schedule.
