Camille Jania advanced to a pair of semifinal matches at the Billie Jean King Invitational (Gil Talbot).
FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Harvard women's tennis team combined for 11 wins and advanced to two flight semifinal matches at the USTA Billie Jean King Invitational in Flushing, N.Y. this weekend.
Camille Jania led the Crimson charge as she won four matches at the tournament and advanced to the semifinal of the flight 'B' singles and doubles. Jania rolled to the singles semifinal with convincing wins over Jamila Paul of Army, 6-1, 6-0, and Monica Chow of Princeton, 6-1, 6-1. Bianca Sanon of Columbia advanced to the championship over Jania with a third set tiebreaker win, 6-1, 5-7, 12-10.
Jania is off to an impressive 5-2 start in singles play this fall.
Wins over Elle Caldwell and Casey Herzberg of Brown, 8-2, and Nevena Selekavi and Joanna Zwirbulis of St. John's, 8-6, advanced Jania and Alex Lehman to the flight 'B' doubles semifinal. The duo played a challenging match against Nadia Lee and Franziska Sprinkmeyer but the Northern Texas combo eventually moved to the flight championship, 8-5.
Hannah Morrill won a pair of lengthy flight 'A' consolation matches. The sophomore downed Cameron Richard of Liberty, 7-5, 5-7, 12-10, and Jennifer Holzberg of Rutgers, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 10-5, before consolation play was stopped after two rounds.
Samantha Gridley, who won the flight 'F' singles championship at the BJK Invitational last season, partnered with Sylvia Li to win two flight 'C' doubles consolation matches as well. Gridley and Li lost a close match against Ilona Serchenko and Barbara Vykydalova of Northern Texas, 9-7, to open the tournament but were able to bounce back with wins over Sarah Kandath and Laura Wiley of Brown, 8-1, and Rebekah Jenkins and Carol Lobel of Liberty, 8-5, to finish 2-1 at the tournament.
The Crimson will next travel to New Haven, Conn. for the ITA Regional Oct. 21-24 before returning to Flushing, N.Y. for the ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 3-6.
