CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Haley Mendez of the top-ranked Harvard women's squash team was named the College Squash Association (CSA) Player of the Week after an impressive performance in a win over No. 2 Yale Feb. 12. It is Mendez's second weekly award of the year, as the freshman received the Harvard COOP Athlete of the Week Jan. 16, and Harvard's second CSA honor. Cece Cortes was named the CSA Player of the Week Feb. 5.
When the contest with No. 2 Yale (15-1, 6-1 Ivy League) became tied 4-4, Mendez (13-1) was left on the court for Harvard (15-0, 7-0 Ivy League) against the Bulldog's Alexandra Van Arkel in the No. 4 position. The Crimson's freshman clinched the match with two extra point wins during a 3-0 (11-5, 12-10, 12-10) clean sheet victory.
The tiebreaking win gave the Crimson its 18th Ivy League title and clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming CSA Women's Team Championship for Harvard. Harvard attempts to take its 13th national championship when it hosts the team championships at the Murr Center Feb. 24-26.
