Harvard Women’s Soccer Welcomes Nine Newcomers

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University head women's soccer coach Ray Leone added nine standouts to the Crimson program, he announced Friday. Joining the team in 2013 will be: Maura Duggan, Lizzie Durack, Joan Fleischman, Bailey Gary, Katie Leonard, Margaret "Midge" Purce, Carly Rotatori, Marissa Segala and Karly Zlatic.

All White Kit ranked the incoming class No. 20 nationally. The nine freshmen represent five states and two countries and include two midfielders, three defenders, three forwards and a goalkeeper.

Maura Duggan

Defender         Poway, Calif./Poway

Before Harvard: Three-year letterwinner and two-time captain at center midfield/center defense for Poway High School and head coach Jen Lalor-Nielsen … Played club soccer for San Diego Surf and head coach Ada Greenwood … First team all-league in 2011 and 2013 … Helped the Surf to the 2011 National Cup and Region IV ODP championship titles … Named PHS Defensive MVP in 2011 and 2013 … Also lettered as a freshman and sophomore in lacrosse ... Sister Kara Duggan was an All-American soccer player for Williams College.

Lizzie Durack

Goalkeeper     Sydney, Australia/Sydney Girls High School

Before Harvard: U20 England National Team member … Competed in the European Cup in the summer of 2013 ... Previous member of Australian national program ... Played for the Everton Ladies Football Club (2013) and the Western Sydney Wanderers (2012-13) … Starting goalkeeper for the England U19 squad … Toured Spain and Norway during the European Cup Qualifiers in 2013 … Starting goalie and captain of Australian U19s Schoolgirls Team that went undefeated during 2012 Tour of United Kingdom and Ireland … Pierre de Coubertin Olympic Award for Leadership and Commitment to Support (2012).

Joan Fleischman

Forward/Midfielder    Chevy Chase, Md./Sidwell Friends School

Before Harvard: Played midfield and forward for Martin Dell and the Sidwell Friends School … Played club soccer for ECNL member Bethesda Freedom '93, coached by Jonathan Morgan and Ellis Pierre … Scored 70 goals during her high school career … Earned All-Metropolitan Area recognition three-straight years … A three-time All-League honoree … Also played lacrosse.  

Bailey Gary 

Defender         Davis, Calif./Davis

Before Harvard: Attended Davis High School … Won the 2010 ECNL Championship with San Juan SC and head coach Zeca Neto and Tony Perez … Participated in the AYSO VIP program, helping to teach a disabled child to play soccer.

Katie Leonard 

Midfielder       Denver, Colo./Denver East

Before Harvard: Played club soccer for Real Colorado and head coaches James Harris and Lorne Donaldson … Midfielder for Beth Hinz at Denver East High School … Two-time captain with Denver East … Led Real Colorado to the 2011 Region IV finals and the 2010 Region IV championship title … Squad was also 2010 Farwest Regional champs … All-State 5A honorable mention in 2010 … No. 2 leading scorer in Colorado in 2010 … Captain, East High School Soccer Team Spring 2011

Margaret "Midge" Purce

Before Harvard: A member of the U.S. team that won the 2012 CONCACAF U17 Women's Championship in Guatemala and qualified for the 2012 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup … Played and started in all three matches, scoring three goals … Starter for Good Counsel and head coach Jim Bruno ... Played for Freestate Soccer under head coach and 1991 Women's World Cup champion Shannon Cirovski …Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year in 2012 … Two-time All-Met Player of the Year … NSCAA All-American as a sophomore and junior … Concluded her prep soccer career with 101 goals and 39 assists.
