Harvard begins its 2016 fall campaign on the road against Navy (Gil Talbot).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's rugby team is set to open its 2016 campaign with a road contest against Navy. The match is set for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10.
Harvard is coming off a 16-12 season in 2015. The Crimson finished 5-6 during the fall 15's season, including 3-2 during regular-season conference play. In the spring, Harvard claimed its first Ivy 7's Championship to earn a birth to the USA Rugby College 7's National Championships.
Head coach Sue Parker enters her fourth season at the helm of Crimson rugby. She is assisted by Anthony Purpura, who joined Parker's staff in the spring of 2016. Jenny Lui will serve as the volunteer coach for the upcoming season.
Leader of the Pack
Junior Maya Learned has been selected as the captain of 2016-17 rugby squad. She returns after an injury sidelined her for most of her sophomore year. Prior to the injury, Learned was a starter at tight-head prop and scored two tries against Yale on Sept. 19, 2015.
Navy women's rugby currently plays in the Mason Dixon Conference and the National Rugby Championships in the fall and spring seasons. Last spring, Navy went 9-2 in a variety of tournaments and regular-season contests. The Midshipmen took third at the Harvard Tournament, while also placing first at the Princeton Tournament and Penn State Tournament.
