Jaffe Goes Undefeated to Lead Wrestling at Pitt Duals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Competing in dual action for the first time this season, Harvard wrestling went 0-3 against No. 8 North Carolina State, Binghamton and West Virginia at the Pitt Duals on Saturday, Jan. 14. The Crimson combined to win 10 bouts through the three matchups.

Freshman A.J. Jaffe led the Crimson with a 3-0 record at 141 pounds, winning one bout by major decision and two by decision. He opened the action against the Wolfpack with an 8-0 shutout over Robbie Rizzolino, and closed with triumphs on the mat against Joe Caruana (Binghamton) and Joe Wheeling (West Virginia).

Freshman Kyle Bierdumpfel (165), junior Josef Johnson (174) and senior Nicholas Gajdzik (285) each posted 2-1 records, with five victories coming by decision and one by technical fall. Bierdumpfel tallied a 9-2 win over Brian Hamann in his first action of the day, and continued with a dominant 16-1 campaign against Jake Einbinder (Binghamton).

Johnson rebounded from the opener with a 3-2 victory over Anthony DePrez (Binghamton) and finished the afternoon with a 5-0 shutout of Ty Millward (West Virginia). The results gave him a team-high 20 wins on the season. Gajdzik, meanwhile, opened the day with a 9-2 victory over NC State's Tyler Johnson, and closed with a 1-0 triumph in a battle with West Virginia's Brandon Ngati.

Harvard also got a victory by Jeffrey Ott (133) against Binghamton, an 18-2 technical fall against Ian Lupole.

Harvard wrestling returns to Cambridge for its first home action of the season Jan. 21 against Franklin and Marshall and Bucknell at the Malkin Athletic Center. Both matchups will be broadcast on the Ivy League Digital Network.
