Keith and Peppelman Split Matches on Day 1 of NCAA Championships
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Harvard's two wrestlers at the 2011 NCAA Championships both went 1-1 Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center. Steven Keith (125) and Walter Peppelman (157) will have a chance to wrestle their way back to the platform beginning tomorrow morning.
Steven Keith earned a 1-0 decision over Shane Young of West Virginia for his first victory at the NCAA Championships. After a scoreless first period, Keith rode Young out for the second period. In the third session, Keith escaped but not before Young erased riding time. Young took several shots in the final seconds of the period, but Keith fourth them off for the win. In the second round Thursday night, Keith faced top-seeded Anthony Robles of Arizona State. Robles took an early lead and controlled the match before winning 15-0.
Keith will face North Dakota State's Trent Srinkle.
Eleventh-seeded Peppelman wasted little time against his first round opponent earning a fall in 32 seconds. The Harrisburg, Pa., native pinned Vincent Salminen of North Dakota State to pick up his first NCAA Championship victory. In the second round, Peppelman fell to sixth-seeded Derek St. John of Iowa, 8-2. St. John struck first and was able to hold on throughout the match.
Peppelman, who has 30 wins this season, takes on Aaron Sulzer of Eastern Michigan.
Wrestling gets underway at 10:30 a.m.
