No. 5 Women’s Fencing Captures 13th Beanpot Title

WALTHAM, Mass.-  Taking home the Beanpot trophy for the 13th consecutive year, the No. 5 Harvard women's fencing team saw victories over fellow Boston schools, Brandeis, Boston College and MIT.

Fencing action began when the Crimson took on host Brandeis for a 20-7 victory. In sabre, Gabrielle Tartakovsky, Martha Merriam and Marta Lasota tabbed an 8-1 victory with a collective +27-touch differential. In a close foil battle, the Crimson recorded a 5-4 victory before the epee trio of Saanchi Kukadia, Sharon Ra and Catherine Beddingfield tallied a 7-2 record.

In another 20-7 success, Harvard battled the Eagles from Boston College to a 5-4 in sabre, 9-0 sweep in foil and sealed the overall win with a 6-3 epee performance. Foil members, Cynthia Liu, Melissa Du and Natalie Yang tallied a collective +31-touch differential over the nine bouts for the dominant offensive attack.

Rounding out the tournament against its Cambridge neighbor, MIT, Harvard opened up the first of two perfect performances from the sabre squad of Gabrielle Tartakovsky, Elizabeth Tartakovsky and Marta Lasota. Continuing with the perfection theme, foil trio, Liana Henderson-Semel, Cynthia Liu and Melissa Du secured the Beanpot Championship title after tabbing another 9-0 victory, before the epee team tallied seven more wins.

Harvard Highlights

  • Senior co-captain Gabrielle Tartakovsky collected seven wins with a +22-touch differential over her nine bouts. Additionally, Tartakovsky put up a sweep against MIT with two coming from a perfect 5-0 touch score.
  • The foil team tabbed two perfect 9-0 records against their competitors from Boston College and MIT.
  • Sophomore epee specialist Saanchi Kukadia recorded a sweep over her opponents with a +24-touch differential for the Crimsons highest of the evening.
