POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- The Harvard women's fencing team competed for the second time this fall season at the Tradition Tournament on Sunday. In its first dual matches of the season, the Crimson captured a 4-1 record after facing competitors from host Vassar, NYU, Penn State, Sacred Heart and Temple.
The underclassmen led the charge for the Crimson over the course of the tournament. Sophomore Natalie Yang paced the foil fencers, finishing the weekend with a 14-1 record. Freshman Cindy Gao led the epee fencers, recording a 14-1 record at the end of the weekend as well. For sabre, sophomore Marta Lasota tallied a 12-3 record.
Harvard started the tournament off strong, defeating Vassar 24-3 with sweeps in both foil and epee. The Crimson continued to dominate, picking up wins over Penn State (14-13) and NYU (22-5). Round four saw the women fall narrowly to Temple 14-13, despite a 5-4 mark in epee.
The Crimson closed out the weekend with a 19-8 win over Sacred Heart, including 8-1 foil and 7-2 epee marks.
The women are back in action this Tuesday, Dec. 5 hosting Wellesley and Tufts at the Malkin Athletic Center. All matches will be broadcast on the Ivy League Network.
