QUEENS, N.Y. – The No. 3 Harvard women's fencing team opened the 2011 portion of its schedule Sunday by topping defending national champion Penn State for the second time this season and beat host St. John's at the St. John's Super Cup.
The Crimson went 2-3 on the day, beating No. 2 Penn State, 15-12, and the host No. 5 Red Storm, 16-11. The team fell to No. 1 Notre Dame, 16-11, No. 10 Ohio State, 18-9, and was edged by No. 6 Columbia, 14-13.
The foil team went a perfect 15-0 Sunday to lead the Crimson, led by freshman Alexandra Kiefer, who earned a win over 2008 Olympian and two-time national champion Doris Willette from Penn State. Shelby McCloud and Katherine Chou also contributed to the undefeated day for the foil athletes.
The women return to action Feb. 6 across town at Cambridge rival MIT for the MIT Invitational.
