UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Sophomore co-captains Caroline Vloka and Noam Mills of the Harvard women's fencing team each medaled during the first day of competition at the Garret Penn State Open Saturday.

Vloka, who won last year's meet, claimed the silver medal in the sabre after falling to Sarah Borrmann of Notre Dame in the final.  Mills, meanwhile, earned the bronze in the epee, after dropping a close match to Penn State's Anastasia Ferdman, 15-14, in the semifinal round.

Also in the sabre, freshman Elena Helgiu placed 16th, while sophomore Hayley Levitt finished 28th in the weapon.  A trio of freshmen--Nadia Eldeib, Felicia Sun and Alexa Fishman--went 18th, 19th and 44th, respectively.

In the foil competition, sophomore Shelby MacLeod was Harvard's top finisher in the weapon, grabbing 13th.  Freshman Katherine Chou rounded out the field for the Crimson, coming in 30th.
