No. 5 Radcliffe’s Varsity Four and Eight Advance to Grand Finals

PRINCETON, N.J. – On day one of the 2018 IRA National Championships, the varsity four and eight boats of No. 5 Radcliffe lightweight crew advanced to the Grand Finals on Sunday, June 3.   

The varsity eight battled neck and neck with MIT through the semifinal, with the Engineers edging out the Black and White by about a half second at the flag, clocking 6:50.011 and 6:50.519 respectively in heat one. The varsity eight will take the water again tomorrow in the Grand Final at 11:20 a.m. against Stanford, BU, Princeton, Georgetown, Wisconsin and MIT. 

The varsity four was also put to the test in its heat. Facing the same field as the varsity eight, the four crossed the finish line in 8:00.021 to move on to the Grand Final, scheduled for Sunday, June 3 at 8:50 a.m. 

Going with the theme of the day, the double was challenged in its heat, trailing Tulsa, Wisconsin and Stanford to advance to the repechage later in the morning. Pitted again against the Badgers and Cardinal, along with MIT, Boston University and Georgetown, the Black and White finished fifth in the heat with a time of 8:18.514, almost four seconds faster than its race earlier in the morning.

The regatta will continue tomorrow, Sunday, June 3 and will be streamed live.
