The Black and White take down No. 1 Stanford by open water in V8 race.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 2 Harvard-Radcliffe defeated a top-notch field Saturday morning at the Lightweight Invitational, taking down No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 BU, No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 7 MIT on the Charles River in a steady, swirling headwind.

Stanford took an early lead and held a four-seat advantage at the 1000m mark. The Black and White did not look shaken, keeping composure and making a move just after the Mass. Ave. Bridge. Gaining on the Cardinal, Radcliffe took a three-seat lead by the MIT boathouse and held on for an open water win. The Black and White crossed in 7:19.3, holding off any Stanford comeback (7:26.0). A close race for third, Wisconsin edged BU by nearly two seconds and MIT finished last with open water.

In the second varsity event, Radcliffe jumped out to an early lead on choppy water. Heading into the halfway point, the Black and White held a three seat lead over Wisconsin and opened up to a full boat length advantage with 500 meters to race. A sprint to the finish, the Black and White closed with a time of 7:39.4 and posted an open water lead over Wisconsin (7:48.9) and Stanford (7:55.8). BU finished fourth and the Engineers, dealing with an oar that popped out of the lock, ranked last.

In a two-boat heat, Radcliffe earned a win over the Terriers in the 3V race. The Black and White led for the majority of the race, but could not shake BU, registering a time of 7:53.5 to win by three seats.

The Black and White will be back in action tomorrow in search of the Muri Cup against MIT.
