No. 2 Harvard-Radcliffe Hosts Lightweight Invitational, Muri Cup

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After a weekend off from competition, No. 2 Harvard-Radcliffe lightweight crew returns to the Charles River to host the Lightweight Invitational with top crews No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 BU, No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 7 MIT racing Saturday April 19. The Black and White will return to the Charles Sunday to vye for the Muri Cup with MIT.

Crack the Champagne
Harvard-Radcliffe will be debuting its newest boat this weekend, the Edith Blue, donated by Edith Cooper '83, the Managing Director, Global Head of Human Capital Management at Goldman Sachs. 

Last Time Out
The Black and White swept Georgetown April 5 on the Charles River, as the varsity eight started the day off, posting a time of 7:31.3 in a strong, cross headwind and head current. Radcliffe won by open water, as the Hoyas finished with a time of 8:05.2.

In the Polls
The Black and White sits at No. 2 in the latest USRowing poll with 175 points. Radcliffe is just one point behind No. 1 Stanford, garnering four of the nine first place votes. Princeton, BU, and Wisconsin round out the top five.

Scouting the Field
The race will feature five of the top seven crews in the country, including No. 1 Stanford and No. 2 Radcliffe. The Cardinal last competed at the San Diego Crew Classic, winning the lightweight grand final. BU, Wisconsin and MIT raced in the Knecht Cup last Sunday. The Terriers took second overall in the grand final behind Princeton with a time of 6:54.88. The Badgers were now far behind in third (6:56.62) and MIT ranked fifth (7:04.40).

Muri Cup
The Muri Cup, named for Harvard men's lightweight freshman coach and former MIT standout Linda Muri, began in 2009. The Black and White have won three-straight in the series and hold a 4-0-1 all-time record (Wisconsin won in 2010).

In the Launch
A successful rowing coach at multiple levels, Elizabeth "Lou" Berl begins her first season with the Radcliffe lights in 2014. Formerly the head coach at her alma mater Trinity College, Berl also has stops with Virginia and Ohio State.

Last Season
Radcliffe upped its bronze medal performance from 2012 with a second-place finish a season ago at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships. The Black and White was clipped by Stanford in the grand final. The lightweight four also crossed second, edged out by Wisconsin.
