Radcliffe Lights Place Third at Head of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Radcliffe lightweight eight earned a third-place finish, narrowly missing the runner-up spot, Sunday at the Head of the Charles Regatta, the world's largest two-day rowing event.

The Black and White finished in 17:16.1, barely a second off the pace of second-place Stanford, the defending national champion. Wisconsin won the race in 16:53.0. Radcliffe completed the three-mile course more than a half-minute ahead of fourth-place Georgetown's pace. The Radcliffe B entry earned  a top-five finish of its own, in 18:20.20.

"All three boats raced well," head coach Michiel Bartman said. "We were just a little unfortunate to finish just one second behind last year's national champion. Our crew had a strong finish but was disappointed they couldn't come back all the way on them. But we had a strong race, and I'm very happy with the results."

The lightweight four finished ninth in 20:26.1.

The third-place lightweight eight featured rowers Elizabeth Lenczowski, Erika McCormick, 6: Marissa Reichel, Kelly McCarthy, Emma Lukasiewicz, Elizabeth Hamilton, Devi Lockwood and Katherine Mallett and coxswain Erin Driscoll.

The Radcliffe lightweight showing was part of a strong overall day for Harvard and Radcliffe rowers. The Harvard heavyweights won the men's championship eights race, while the Radcliffe heavyweights and Harvard lightweights each finished second in their top races.
