CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Radcliffe lightweight varsity eight finished third, nearly half a minute faster than the fourth-place crew, at the 2010 Head of the Charles Regatta Sunday afternoon on the Charles River.

The Black and White trailed only defending national champion Wisconsin and Princeton and finished ahead of entries from fellow national powers Stanford and Georgetown. The Radcliffe second varsity eight placed seventh in the 12-team field.

"I'm tremendously proud of how they performed," said Heather Cartwright, Radcliffe's head coach. "I thought both the varsity and second varsity rowed their best races today. This was the focus of our fall season, and I think the team is inspired to keep working hard."

The Radcliffe varsity finished strong. The Black and White's time at the Cambridge Boat Club trailed Princeton by more than nine seconds, but Radcliffe gained more than four seconds on the Tigers to finish in 16:33.524. Wisconsin won in 16:06.102, followed by Princeton in 16:28.831. Brock University of Canada placed fourth in 17:01.724. Georgetown had the fourth-best time but was assessed a one-minute penalty for impeding Radcliffe's attempt to pass. Stanford was fifth in 17:03.356.

Radcliffe's second boat completed the three-mile course in 17:13.904, more than 12 seconds ahead of eighth-place MIT.
