Radcliffe Lightweight Lizzy Bates Makes U.S. U23 Squad

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Rising senior Lizzy Bates of the Radcliffe lightweight crew has qualified for the U.S. Under 23 National Team that will compete in the 2010 World Rowing U23 Championships July 22-25 in Brest, Belarus.

Bates will be racing with Sarah Keller of Trinity College in the lightweight women’s double. They secured their spot by winning their event at the USRowing U23 Trials at Mercer Lake, N.J., Friday. Racing for Vesper Boat Club, they finished first in 7:21.04, more than 12 seconds ahead of the double from All-American Rowing Camp and more than 23 seconds ahead of the GMS Rowing Center entry.

The last Radcliffe lightweight to race at the World Championships was Sarah Bates Johnson ’06, Lizzy’s older sister. She competed in the lightweight quad at the 2007 World U23 Championships, placing fourth.
