Harvard-Radcliffe Crew Opens Season at Ivy League/Big Ten Double Duels

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The spring season is set to get underway this weekend for the Harvard-Radcliffe heavyweight women's crew team, as the Black and White will square off against Michigan State and Ohio State at the Ivy League/Big Ten Double Duels Saturday in New Jersey.

Yale will be the second Ivy League school in action against the Spartans and the Buckeyes Saturday. Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey will serve as the host site of the regatta.

At the Eastern Sprints last season, Harvard-Radcliffe took gold in five of the six races it competed in. The Black and White claimed first in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight, varsity four B and varsity four C races. At the Ivy League Championships, Harvard-Radcliffe took fifth. 

This will be the second regatta of the season for the Spartans who had eight boats race in the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational hosted by the University of Louisville March 18. The top finisher for Michigan State at that event was the third varsity which took second. The varsity eight boat placed third in its race. Michigan State finished the 2017 season ranked 19th in the final USRowing/CRCA Coaches Poll. 

Saturday's competition will be the first of the season for the Buckeyes. Ohio State placed fifth at last season's NCAA Championships and was tied for fourth in the final 2017 USRowing/CRCA Coaches Poll.

In her 32nd season of guiding the Harvard-Radcliffe heavyweight crews in 2017-18, head coach Liz O'Leary owns a 204-112 career dual record with 16 appearances in the NCAA Championship, including the 2003 title and a 2005 bronze medal finish.
