The varsity eight hung on to win a thrilling race for the O'Leary Cup, leading a regatta sweep for the Black and White against No. 20 Dartmouth and Syracuse Saturday on the Charles River. The Radcliffe varsity defeated runner-up Dartmouth by 1.6 seconds for the first of five victories on the morning for the Black and White. Video of the varsity race can be seen here.
The first set of Ivy League women's boat polls has been released. Each of Radcliffe's five boats ranks among the top four in the league, with the second varsity eight, varsity four A and varsity four B each ranked second. The varsity eight and third varsity eight are ranked fourth. Saturday's second race pits against each other the top-ranked and second-ranked B fours in the Ancient Eight.
Radcliffe posted a three-second win against the Bulldogs to capture the Case Cup last season on the Charles. The teams were even for 1,500 meters before the Black and White took control with a strong sprint. Yale won each of the morning's other three races, including a win by just three-fifths of a second in the second varsity race.
Yale holds a 17-14 edge in the race for the Case Cup, which dates back to 1980. The Bulldogs had won the trophy seven years in a row before Radcliffe's victory last year.
The Radcliffe and Yale varsity eights have combined for 12 EAWRC Sprints crowns (Yale 7, Radcliffe 5) and five national titles (Yale 3, Radcliffe 2).
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale (3-6) owns varsity wins against Boston University, Columbia and Penn. The Bulldogs also rowed Dartmouth to nearly dead heat, losing only after video review. Yale is coming off a loss to Princeton and Southern California last weekend.
