CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Marking its ninth tournament appearance in program history, the Harvard women's basketball team has been selected to the WNIT, the tournament's selection committee announced tonight, March 18. The Crimson will welcome Drexel to Lavietes Pavilion this Friday, March 22. Game time is set to be announced tomorrow.
The Crimson will be making its seventh appearance in the WNIT over the past eight seasons and will host a game for the first time in program history this weekend. Drexel posted a 24-8 overall record and 14-4 conference mark during the 2018-19 season. The Crimson and Dragons have only met once in program history back in 2013, as Drexel recorded an 82-72 victory over Harvard.
Harvard has made nine appearances in the WNIT, the most among Ivy League schools, and on March 15, 2012 the Crimson earned the first WNIT win in Ancient Eight history with its 73-71 win at Hofstra. Advancing to the second round three times, Harvard followed that victory up a year later with a 61-57 win at Hartford in the first round of the 2013 tournament and also won its opening round matchup a year ago at New Hampshire, 69-56. The Crimson became the first team in conference history to earn an at-large berth to a postseason tournament with an invitation to the WNIT in 2014.
This will be the program's 15th postseason appearance, the most of any Ivy League team. Harvard has competed in six NCAA Tournaments, and in 1998 became the only No. 16 seed to upset a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament on either the men's and women's side when it defeated Stanford, 71-67.
