Benzan Earns Ivy League Co-Player, Rookie of the Week Honors

Freshman guard Katie Benzan of Harvard women's basketball earned Ivy League Co-Player and Rookie of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday.

Benzan was excellent in two wins for Harvard at the Fordham Holiday Classic, and was named MVP of the tournament for her efforts. She notched 16 points, and matched a career high with 7 assists, adding two steals and a block in a 79-62 win over UNC Asheville on Thursday afternoon. In the championship game against Buffalo, Benzan had a game-high 18 points, with five assists and three steals in a 74-62 win.

She went 8-for-12 (66.7) on the weekend from three-point range, and is now ranked 12th in the nation with a 50% shooting percentage (35-for-70) from three-point range. Benzan was also a combined 6-for-6 from the free throw line, and now leads the team in free throw shooting percentage (92.9%).

Benzan's play has helped Harvard off to its best start in school history (11-1), as the Crimson has recorded a program-record 11 straight non-conference wins and has an 11-game winning streak overall, the longest since the 2006-07 season.

Harvard will open Ivy League play next Saturday (Jan. 7) at Lavietes Pavilion with a 2:00 p.m. contest against Dartmouth. The game will be available to stream on the Ivy League Digital Network.
