Career High from Tummala Gives Women’s Basketball a 92-79 Win Over Brown

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With a balanced offensive attack, the Harvard women's basketball team topped Ivy League foe Brown, 92-79, Saturday evening at Lavietes Pavilion. Prior to the contest, Harvard honored seniors AnnMarie Healy, Kit Metoyer and Shilpa Tummala, who combined for 50 points.

Six Crimson players recorded double-digits in the victory. Tummala tallied a career-high 24 points and 12 boards for her fourth double-double of the season. Junior Destiny Nunley followed with a career-high 15 points. Metoyer and Healy each contributed 13 points, as rookies Sydney Skinner and Madeline Raster rounded out the scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Harvard improves to 14-11, and 9-3 in the Ancient Eight, while Brown falls to 13-13 overall, and 1-11 in conference play.

The two teams started slow, but Harvard held a 7-3 lead at the halfway point. The Bears responded with a 6-0 run, taking its first lead, 9-7, 50 seconds later. A Healy jumper closed out the first quarter, putting the Crimson up by one, 15-14. Harvard was hot from outside, hitting at a 50-percent clip.

Nunley stepped up to give the Crimson a five-point edge, 19-14, after hitting the first two shots of the second quarter. Holding a four-point lead, Harvard's 12-3 run broke the game open and put the Crimson on top, 36-26, with 38 seconds to play. Three triples were hit in the final 30 seconds, with Raster connecting before the buzzer to put the Crimson up by seven at the break, 39-32.

A 5-0 Bears run narrowed the game to seven, 48-41, at the 7:14 mark, but the Crimson was able to bounce back with 5-0 to push ahead, 53-41. Metoyer stopped another 5-0 spurt by the Bears with a triple with 3:33 remaining in the third. The teams traded baskets in the final two minutes of the game, as Raster made the final point of the quarter to put Harvard up 12 once more, 65-53.

Two free throws capped a 12-4 Brown run, clipping the Harvard advantage to four, 69-65, with 5:36 left in the game. The Crimson would not go down without a fight, posting seven of the next nine points to gain some breathing room, 76-67. Tummala nailed a triple in the corner and the Crimson hit from the free throw line down the stretch to take home the victory.

Harvard hits the road for its final matchups of the regular season, heading to Princeton and Penn next weekend. The contest against the Tigers will be broadcast on ESPN3 and the Ivy League Digital Network at 6 p.m., while the 6 p.m. game versus the Quakers can be seen on the Ivy League Digital Network.

Game Notes:  Senior Shilpa Tummala registered a career-high 24 points, her 19th time posting double-digits, while Metoyer posted her 15th career game tallying double-figures with 13 points. Sydney Skinner recorded double-figures for the fifth time this year with 12 points, as AnnMarie Healy posted double-figures for the 25th time this season and the 48th of her career with 13 points. The Crimson moves to 6-0 with the starting lineup of Healy, Tummala, Metoyer, Raster and Skinner. This marks the longest win streak of the season.
