Marshall, Welsh To Represent Harvard at USATF Outdoor Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two members of the Harvard men's track and field team - rising sophomore Sam Welsh (discus throw) and recently graduated senior Myles Marshall (800m) - and former women's track and field standout Gabby Thomas (200m) will compete at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships, to be held next weekend (July 25-28) in Des Moines, Iowa.

Marshall, a USTFCCCA Honorable Mention selection after qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 800m, recorded his qualifying mark at the NCAA East Preliminary Meet, where he placed first in 1:48.23. Marshall was the Ivy Outdoor Heps champion in that event as well, completing an indoor/outdoor sweep of the 800m at Heps.

Welsh capped off a fantastic first year at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, as the discus thrower placed sixth in the event to earn USTFCCCA First-Team All-America honors. Welsh went on to set a personal best in the discus throw - 195'6" (59.61m) - at the Harvard-Yale vs. Oxford-Cambridge meet, with that mark qualifying him for the USATF Outdoor Championships.

Thomas, won the national championship in the 200 meters at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and holds the collegiate record in the event, with a time of 22.38. Her qualifying time for the 2019 USATF Outdoor Championships is 22.19. The Florence, Mass. native completed her historic career at Harvard as an eight-time All-American and a 24-time Ivy League Heps champion, holding nine Harvard records.

Welsh will compete on Thursday (July 25) at 5:30 pm (CT), with coverage on NBC Sports Gold. Marshall will also compete on Thursday, with the first round of the 800m taking place at 6:47 pm (CT).
