Okwelogu Brings Home Silver Medal at the 2014 African Athletics Championships

MARRAKECH, Morocco – A stellar summer of international competition continued for sophomore thrower Nikki Okwelogu, as she captured the silver medal in the discus at the 2014 African Athletics Championships in Morocco Tuesday, August 12.

Okwelogu, who amassed four throws of 50 meters or better, saved he best for last, posting a 51.66m mark to secure runner-up honors. Nigerian country-mate, Chinwe Okoro won the event with a toss of 59.79m.

The silver medal in the discus marks the first medal at a major international competition of Okwelogu's career. At 19 years old, she represented the youngest entry at the African Athletics Championships.

UPDATE: On Thrusday, August 14, Okwelogu competed in the shot put event with a long throw of 15.14m, good for fourth-place overall.
