CAMBRIDGE-Mass. The Harvard ski team kicked off the 2019-20 season with the Inaugural Harvard Carnival, highlighted by a second place finish from first-year Rémi Drolet in the men's 20km classic race. The carnival was live-streamed on ESPN+, taking place in Waterville Valley, N.H. for the alpine events and Craftsbury, Vt. for the nordic races. The team finished out the event in eighth place.
Cold weather was the theme of day one for the slalom races, with the high temperature in single digits and the wind chill lingering around -30 degrees throughout the day. In the women's slalom, three Crimson athletes placed top 60 in the first run to move onto run two. Junior Nellie Ide placed 12th on the day with a two-run time of 1:43.88 while Allegra Colman placed 43rd (1:56.82). The men also had three skiers compete in both runs, with sophomore Jack Despres finishing in 34th (1:40.04) out of 60 competitors. First-Year Liam McNamara and senior Carter Kendig followed closely behind Despres, finishing 39th (1:41.07) and 41st (1:41.41).
Despres led the men in the giant slalom with a top-25 finish (2:10.67) on the second day of the carnival out of the top 60 athletes, while Ide placed 32nd in the women's giant slalom, making her the front runner for Harvard in both alpine events.
First-year Rémi Drolet was the highpoint of the nordic team, finishing third in the men's 10km skate (21:41.0) facing nearly 90 competitors , and second in the 20km classic (54:21.6). The Crimson had three more athletes place in the top-25 in the 10km with a 20th (James Kitch, 26:31.4), 21st (William Rhatigan, 26:32.4) and 22nd (Mackinley FitzPatrick, 26:32.7) finish. The 10km men's race alone brought in 91 points for the Crimson.
On the women's side, sophomore Ursula Voltz led the Crimson in both races, placing 45th in the women's 5km skate with a time of (15:26.8) and 36th in the 15km race (50:56.5), both races with nearly 90 competitors.
