WATERVILLE, Maine – The Harvard ski team scored 216 points in the nordic competition at the Colby Carnival on Sunday. Junior Nina Armstrong led the Crimson with a ninth-place finish (16:31.5) in the five-kilometer competition. Sophomore Mackinley FitzPatrick led the men's unit in 30:34.4 at the 10K distance. In a modified format due to Friday's weather, only the 5K and 10K classic events were held. Harvard sits in eighth place after the nordic events and will conclude the meet with alpine events in Sugarloaf, Maine next weekend.
Armstrong's top-10 finish was the second of her collegiate career, first for a distance event. The Lake Placid, N.Y. native previously finished seventh at the St. Lawrence Carnival Classic Sprint last season. Fellow third-year Hannah Hardenbergh also had one of her best distance performances, placing 16th in a time of 16:43.7. Sophomore Tegan Thorley (17:06.1) was the third scorer for the Crimson. The women's team amassed 152 points toward the team total. On the men's side, sophomore William Rhatigan (30:50.3) and senior Connor Green (30:51.5) joined Fitzpatrick in contributing to the 64 points from the men's team.
"We're off to a good start," the Paul J. Finnegan Family Head Coach for Harvard Skiing (Nordic) Chris City said. "I look forward to building on our performances as we get more races under our belt."
The Harvard alpine skiers open their season at the Colby Carnival in Sugarloaf, Maine Jan. 20-21. The nordic skiers will compete in the St. Michael's Carnival next weekend.
