CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following its seventh Ivy Championship, Harvard softball handed out five end of the season awards and announced its 2018-19 captains on Tuesday. Rising seniors Kaitlyn Schiffhauer and Katie Duncan were voted by their teammates as captains for the upcoming season.
Schiffhauer, Harvard's regular center fielder, was chosen amongst her peers to return as one of the two captains for next season. As a junior, the southern California native guided the Crimson to an overall mark of 23-18, including a 14-7 record against Ivy opponents.
Duncan, a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and the 2018 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year, was the top pitcher in the Ivy League. The northern New Jersey native led the conference posting a 15-10 mark with a 3.17 ERA, and 82 strikeouts.
Additionally, Duncan was also presented with the Most Outstanding Pitcher award for the second straight year. The All-Ivy first team selection tied her career single-game best striking out seven batters against Southern Utah on March 11 and Ivy foe Dartmouth on April 21.
Junior shortstop Rhianna Rich, a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, earned the Best Defensive Player award for the third consecutive year, while also receiving the Best Offensive Player award. Appearing and starting in all 41 games, Rich anchored the Crimson middle infield turning a career single-season best eight double plays. At the plate, the southern California native recorded a career year and found herself amongst Division I's top-10 in four, core, offensive categories.
The Becky Pocius Award, bestowed annually to the player or players that embody the qualities of true team players, was given to senior Melissa Lacro. A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, Lacro has served as one of Harvard's top pinch hitters in program history.
The Betty Ippolito Legacy Award, given to the player who has done the most to continue the tradition of excellence in Harvard softball, was presented to senior Maddy Kaplan. A steady presence in the outfield and atop the lineup, Kaplan made an impact in all facets of the game along with her leadership on and off the diamond.
