CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior outfielder Maddy Kaplan and sophomore pitcher Sarah Smith earned Ivy League weekly honors, the conference announced today (Feb. 27). Kaplan earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors, while Smith was named Pitcher of the Week.
Kaplan had the best weekend at the plate of any Harvard player at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational, batting .588 with 10 hits in 17 at bats. Kaplan notched a team-best eight RBIs, with three multi-hit games. She went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs in a 15-1 win over Detroit Mercy. She added two hits, a run scored, and four RBIs, including a two-run RBI double in the third inning to break the game open in Harvard's 8-0 win over Stony Brook. She reached base twice against Loyola (Ill.) (hit, BB), and had her best day at the plate against Albany on Sunday, going 4-for-4, with two RBIs and two runs scored in an 8-4 win over the Great Danes.
Smith was excellent in her three appearances, recording two wins on the weekend (Detroit, Albany). Against Detroit, Smith went five strong innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out five for her first win of the season. On Sunday against Albany, Smith came into the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the first inning and kept Harvard in the game, allowing one earned run over the next 4 2/3 innings pitched, striking out five batters to earn her second win of the weekend.
Harvard (3-2) will head to California in two weeks for a tournament co-hosted by Long Beach State and Cal St. Fullerton. The Crimson will play games against San Diego State (2), Cal St. Fullerton, Long Beach State and Longwood on March 10-12.
