CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard softball team came back with eight runs after an early deficit but its rally fell short as Boston University topped the Crimson, 14-8, in Harvard’s home opener. The Crimson slips to 4-13 on the season while BU improves to 11-10.
The Terriers jumped out to a big lead in the top of the first, plating 11 runs on five hits. Whitney Shaw drove in Harvard’s first run in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center but BU came back with two more in the second to take a 13-1 lead after two.
The Crimson closed the gap considerably in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on six hits. Kassy Shiotani led off the inning with a double and came in to score along with Whitney Shaw when Jennifer Francis launched a homerun over the centerfield fence. Jess Ferri doubled down the left field line and scored Harvard’s final run of the inning on a Jessica Pledger single to right. Francis drove in Harvard’s eighth run of the game in the fourth inning but the Terriers tacked one on in the top of the sixth to seal the 14-8 final.
Francis went 2 for 3 at the plate and drove in four runs on the game while Shiotani and Schellberg picked up two hits on the game as well.
