KINGSTON, R.I. – The Harvard softball team plated a run in the top of the seventh to push the game to extra innings but Rhode Island used a four-run 10th to capture a 7-5 win Tuesday afternoon in a makeup game. The loss drops the Crimson to 18-20 on the season while Rhode Island improves to 15-24 on the year.
Harvard jumped out to an early lead as Jessica Pledger drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first and Whitney Shaw bashed a home run to center to give the guests a 2-0 lead after three innings. The Rams responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth on the strength of four hits to take a 3-2 lead. The Crimson took advantage of a Rams miscue in the top of the seventh to knot the score at 3-3, pushing the game to extra frames.
In the top of the tenth, Stephanie Krysiak was placed on second base and Shaw plated her with her second long ball of the game to give the guests a 5-3 lead. Melissa Wilson got the Rams within one with an RBI single and Erika Szymanski drilled a three-run homer to center to give the hosts a 7-5 win.
Shaw ended the game 2 for 5 from the plate with three RBI and two runs scored while Emily Henderson, Melissa Schellberg and Jane Alexander also added hits. Jessica Ferri absorbed the loss in the circle for Harvard while Jayshree Narendra earned her third win of the season for URI.
