Four Regattas in Store for Sailing

The Harvard sailing team will tackle four races this weekend (Athletic Communications).

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard sailing team enters its fourth weekend of competition with four regattas this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1. The schedule for the weekend features the Smith Trophy, Harvard Invitational, Regis Bowl and Rogers Trophy.

Forecast
On Saturday in Boston, the sailors will race through winds from the northeast around five knots with waves around two feet. Weather in Ithaca, New York will include winds from the north at five to 10 knots with waves of one foot or less. Showers are likely in Boston on Saturday. Sunday shows the same conditions for both locations with no rain.

About the Smith Trophy
MIT hosts the George Warren Smith Trophy on the Charles River this weekend. Harvard looks to take the trophy from Tufts who finished first last year, while Harvard placed fifth out of 19 teams.

About the Harvard Invitational
In its second home regatta of the fall season, the Crimson hosts the Harvard Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30. In last year's race, Boston University edged Harvard by one point for sixth place, with Tufts placing first.

About the Regis Bowl
In the women's only regatta, Boston University hosts the Regis Bowl Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Powering through challenging weather conditions, Harvard took third place after a head-to-head tiebreaker with the University of Vermont last fall.

About the Rogers Trophy
In its second annual event, Cornell will host the women's only Rogers Trophy this weekend. This will be the first time the Crimson sails in the event. Hobart and William Smith Colleges took the trophy last year.

Leading the Fleet
Mike O'Connor is in the midst of his 20th season as the Harvard sailing team's head coach. Since he took over the Crimson program in 1997, Harvard has won a pair of national team race championships (2002, 2003), as well as a national coed championship (2003) and a women's national title (2005). 

Captains of the Ship
Senior Dylan Farrell and junior Taylor Gavula were elected captains for the 2017-18 season. Farrell sailed for Harvard at the New England Team Race last season, finishing eighth overall. Gavula competed at the Atlantic Coast Women's Championships, consistently placing within the top-five and finishing ninth overall.

What's Next?
The Crimson returns to the water for two regattas next Saturday, Oct. 7 and Sunday, Oct. 8 including the Barnett Trophy hosted by Bowdoin and the Moody Trophy hosted by URI.
