The Harvard sailing team will host three major regattas this spring, including the 64th Fowle Trophy, which will determine the New England team racing champion (Justine Agaloos).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard sailing team has released its spring 2013 schedule, which currently features 22 major regattas and three home contests.
"The team is looking forward to the spring season," Harvard sailing head coach Mike O'Connor said. "We have a tough schedule that will test the mettle of our young program. We wanted a schedule that would enable all of our starters to sail in multiple top-flight fleet race regattas, and I feel as though we have achieved that."
The Crimson opens the season by hosting the Sharpe Trophy Team Race, an eight-team regatta featuring local foes Yale, Boston College, Dartmouth and MIT, March 2-3 at 9:30 a.m.
After a trip to Maryland for the 66th Truxtun Umstead Trophy at Navy, Harvard will co-host the 84th Boston Dinghy Club Cup with MIT March 23-24 at 9:30 a.m. Also that weekend, the coed squad heads back to Maryland to compete in the Navy-hosted Owen, Mosbacher & Knapp Trophies.
The women will sail for the 27th Women's Brad Dellenbaugh Trophy at Brown March 30-31, while the coed team will split its squad for two local regattas, the BU Trophy and the 3rd Mystic Lake Team Racing Invitational at Tufts. On April 6-7, the women will visit Boston University for the 45th Women's President's Trophy.
The championship portion of the schedule begins April 13-14 as the coed team looks to defend its 2012 New England coed title, its first in 11 years, at the New England Dinghies, hosted by Brown, Robert Williams and Providence.
Eight NEISA qualifiers from the New England Dinghy Championship will compete in the ICSA Semifinal Dinghy Championship April 27-28 at Hampton University for a chance to sail for the 78th ICSA/Gill Dinghy Championship hosted by Eckerd College May 28-30. Last season, the coed squad finished third at the ICSA coed national semifinals and placed fifth at the ICSA/Gill Dinghy Coed National Championship, marking the third straight year Harvard has finished in the top five.
The women's New England Championship will be a local affair with Tufts welcoming teams to its sailing center April 20-21 for the regatta's 43rd installment. The top eight teams will qualify for a spot in the 46th ICSA Sperry Top-Sider Women's Championship, which will take place at Eckerd College, May 21-24. The Crimson took third at the Women's New England Championship and eighth at the Sperry Top-Sider/ICSA Women's National Championship in 2012.
Harvard will play host to nine schools for the 64th Fowle Trophy for the New England Team Racing Championship May 4-5, and the three best finishers will move onto the 54th ICSA APS Team Racing Championship May 25-27 at Eckerd College.
During the fall portion of its schedule, the coed team qualified for the Coed Atlantic Coast Championship by edging Vermont by one point for eighth-place in the Schell Trophy Oct. 27-28. The coed squad finished sixth twice, in the Hood Trophy at Tufts (Sept. 22-23) and Captain Hurst Bowl at Dartmouth (Oct. 13-14), while the women sailed to eighth-place results in the Toni Deutsch '58 Regatta (Sept. 8-9) and the Women's Intersectional at Yale (Oct. 13-14).
