No. 10 Men’s Water Polo Ends Weekend on a High Note Against No. 20 Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif.
– No. 10 Harvard men's water polo finished play at the Rodeo Tournament in Southern California with a 12-7 victory over No. 20 Santa Clara on Sunday. Junior Colin Chiapello and sophomore Nick Bunn tied career-highs with four goals apiece to lead the Crimson to its seventh win against a ranked opponent this season.

The Crimson ended its trip to the West Coast with a final record of 2-2, moving to 18-5 this season. Harvard defeated Fresno Pacific, but fell to No. 20 Loyola Marymount and No. 9 UC Davis by just one goal earlier on the weekend.

Harvard took control early against Santa Clara, using goals from Chiapello, Bunn and sophomore Nathan Ondracek to take a 3-1 lead after the opening quarter.

The Crimson extended its lead to 8-2 in the second frame, highlighted by two consecutive goals from junior captain Harry Tafur. Tafur also recorded two assists, finding Chiapello and Bunn early on in the quarter.

In the third quarter, freshman Charlie Owens began the scoring for Harvard and was followed by the hot hands of Chiapello and Bunn as they beat the Broncos keeper for the third-straight period. The Crimson led by six (11-5) at the conclusion of the quarter as it would go on to earn the 12-7 victory.

Senior Joey Colton and Bunn each notched two assists, joining Tafur with a game-high two assists. Tafur was active on the defensive end as well, tallying a career-high three steals against the Broncos.

Sophmore goaltender Anthony Ridgley amassed 14 saves in net for his fifth double-digit save performance on the year. He also recorded an assist and a steal.

Harvard now looks to five conference games to finish out the regular season, starting with road matches at MIT and Brown on Oct. 29.
