SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Harvard men's water polo team played an inspired fourth period Sunday against No. 5 UC Santa Barbara, but it wasn't enough to keep up with the Gauchos, as the Crimson fell, 15-6, to finish the weekend at 2-3.

Down 11-3 entering the final quarter, the Crimson (6-11, 0-2 Collegiate Water Polo Association) matched the No. 5 Gauchos goal for goal in the fourth period with four to end the game at 15-6.

UCSB jumped out to 6-0 lead in the first quarter and stretched the lead to 8-0 in the second before Evan Zepfel provided the Crimson with its first goal during a power play with 2 minutes, 14 seconds, to go in the first half. Kevin DiSilvestro followed with one of his two goals in the game 32 seconds later to bring Harvard back within six. The Gauchos had the final say in the half when Noah Smith hurled the ball from about 10 meters out for his third goal of the game to lead 9-1.

DiSilvestro led Harvard with two goals. Zepfel, Jeff Lee, junior co-captain Luka Babic and Bret Voith all notched scores in the game as well. Junior goalie Alexandre Popp made six stops in goal for the Crimson. Smith led UCSB with four goals in the game.

The Crimson is back in action for its last home game at 8 p.m. Thursday as Brown pays a visit to Blodgett Pool for a CWPA Northern Division matchup.
