Men’s Volleyball Falls in Five to No. 11 CSUN

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Harvard men's volleyball lost in its second match at the Asics Invitational, 3-2, to No. 11 CSUN, Friday night. The five-set match went by a score of 25-21, 25-19, 32-34, 20-25 and 12-15.

The Crimson opened the match strong, posting a .357 hitting percentage with six different student-athletes registering a kill during the first set. To close out the first set, Harvard went on a 10-5 run and took the set 25-21. Harvard pulled away in the second set early, going on a 10-3 run to take the score from 5-5 to 15-8. The Crimson ultimately won the second set 25-19 behind 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage.

An exciting third set ended in overtime as CSUN took the set 34-32. The Crimson registered 13 kills throughout the set. The set was tied 16 times throughout the 66 total points. Harvard then fell in the final two sets 20-25 and 12-15. 

The Crimson was led by first-year Ryan Hong, who registered 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Five Harvard student-athletes had seven or more kills while junior Matthew Ctvrtlik was one assist (39) shy of tying his career-high in assists (40). Trevor Dow registered a .727 hitting percentage, scoring on eight of his 11 attacks with no errors.

Defensively, first-year Jason Shen led the Crimson with 12 digs while Dow had a piece in seven blocks, registering one solo and six block assists.

Harvard Highlights
- Matthew Ctvrtlik was one assist shy of his career high, assisting on 39 kills tonight.
- First-years led the Crimson as Ryan Hong led Harvard in kills (12) and Jason Shen led the team in digs (12).
- The Crimson outblocked CSUN 12 to 6 and outhit the Matadors .287 to .248.
