Men’s Volleyball Stuns Penn State, 3-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In front of a standing-room only crowd at the Malkin Athletic Center, the Harvard men's volleyball team stunned EIVA foe Penn State in five sets tonight, March 31. The Crimson earned a thrilling 3-2 win by set scores of 25-13, 32-30, 25-27, 16-25 and 15-12. The victory marks the third straight and brought Harvard into sole possession of second place in the EIVA standings over the Nittany Lions, as the Crimson upped its record to 8-2 in conference play and 9-11 overall.

In a battle between two top teams in the league, Riley Moore continued to dominate the Harvard offense, recording a career-high and team-best 14 kills. The senior co-captain notched zero errors for the sixth time this season, allowing him to hit .875 on the night. Brad Gretsch nearly tallied his second double-double of the season, registering 13 kills, nine digs and two service aces.

Marko Kostich handed out a team-high 29 helpers, while Matthew Ctvrtlik assisted with 22. Trevor Dow totaled a season-best nine kills and zero errors to register a .562 attack percentage, while also serving a team-best three aces. The junior middle blocker led the way defensively as well, tallying seven blocks on the night, three of which were block solos. Adding to Harvard's defensive efforts were Ctrvrtlik, Gretsch and Chase Howard who collected 10 and nine digs apiece.

Harvard outhit Penn State .370 to .279 and won the blocking battle 18 to nine. The Crimson gained its second win over the Nittany Lions in the all-time series, ending a five-year drought.

Harvard will conclude its homestand next weekend, April 6-7, welcoming Princeton and NJIT to the Malkin Athletic Center. The Crimson will face the Tigers on Friday at 7 p.m., while senior night will take place against the Highlanders at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
