IRVINE, Calif. – In its third match in three days, the Harvard men's volleyball team (5-11, 5-2 EIVA) wrapped up its California trip with a non-conference contest at No. 14 Concordia Irvine (10-10, 3-3 MPSF) last night, March 12. Despite a dominant second set after falling in the first, the Crimson was unable to hang on and fell in four sets. Strong defense led the Eagles over Harvard by set scores of 13-25, 25-15, 21-25 and 19-25.
Five Crimson players recorded over five kills tonight, including senior Brad Gretsch who tallied a team-best 15 and Erik Johnsson who followed closely behind at 11. Gretsch has now registered double-digit kills in six of the nine matches he has played in this season. Matthew Ctvrtlik set up Harvard's offense with a team-leading 26 assists, while Marko Kostich dished out 15. Five of the Crimson's six service aces on the night came in set two where Trevor Dow collected three and both Ctrvrtlik and Kostich added one each.
Harvard had three players collect double-digit digs on the night with Chase Howard leading the way with a match-high and season-high 18. Ctvrtlik and Johnsson joined Howard in double-figures with 16 and 11 digs, respectively, earning double-doubles for each. Kostich helped the Crimson's defense by putting up a team-high three out of its six blocks.
After a week off, the Crimson will return for a six-match homestand. First facing EIVA opponent Sacred Heart on Friday, March 23 at 7 p.m., the Crimson will welcome Alderson Broaddus Saturday, March 24 at 4 p.m.
