MUNCIE, Ind. – The Harvard men's volleyball team (0-2) was unable to edge Ball State this Saturday night, falling 3-1 to the Cardinals at Worthen Arena. A strong effort from the Ball State attack led the host Cardinals' to a four-set victory with set scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-9.

Matthew Ctvrtlik had a standout night for the Crimson, recording his first career triple-double at Harvard with 10 kills, 16 assists and 10 digs. Marko Kostich also assisted Harvard with 21 assists and 3 blocks, while Riley Moore led the team with a .375 hitting percentage. Harvard tallied 41 kills, 39 assists, 34 digs and four service aces total.

Set One:

  • The Crimson was off to a fast start, tallying the first three points thanks to an attacking error, service ace by Kostich and kill from Erik Johnsson
  • With the score tied almost half way through the set at 10-10, the two teams went point-for-point until the Crimson went on another 3-0 run extending its lead to 17-14
  • Ball State chipped back at the score, going on a 7-0 run and giving them the lead at 22-18 before sealing it at 25-22

Set Two:

  • Courtesy of a string of attacking errors by Ball State, Harvard capitalized on a 5-0 run to take a 9-7 lead early in the set
  • The Cardinals fought back eventually tying the set six times before the Crimson pulled away again beginning at the 19-18 mark with a 3-0 run
  • Harvard sealed the set with two kills by Moore and Ctvrtlik, both assisted by Kostich

Set Three:

  • The first 17 points were neck and neck between the Crimson and the Cardinals, including four kills each from both Moore and Trevor Dow
  • Ball State capitalized on errors and Harvard was unable to catch the Cardinals who went on to win the set 25-21
  • The score would tie nine times throughout the set

Set Four:

  • Ball State came out firing, registering a 7-1 run to start the set
  • Harvard was unable to battle back against the Cardinals' .476 hitting percentage, falling 9-25

 The Crimson begins EIVA action next Saturday, Jan. 27, traveling to Sacred Heart for a 7 p.m. match up.
