CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's volleyball team will kick off its 2018 campaign on the road this weekend. The Crimson will travel to Indiana to face Fort Wayne on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. and No. 15 Ball State on Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Harvard completed its 2017 season with a 10-13 overall record, splitting conference play with a 7-7 mark. The Crimson averaged 10.91 kills per set with a .269% hitting percentage. Along with 8.94 digs per set, the men put up 2.34 blocks per set. At the conclusion of the season, senior setter Marko Kostich was selected to the All-EIVA second team for the 2017 season.
Returning to the Court
The Crimson returns 12 members of the 2017 squad, including senior co-captains Jack Heavey and Riley Moore. One of the Crimson's leading scorers, Erik Johnsson ranked second on the team last season with 229 kills and 40 blocks returns for his sophomore season, along with sophomore Chase Howard who registered 146 digs, good for second on the team.
Harvard welcomes three newcomers to the 2018 roster, including freshmen outside hitters Adam Gordon of San Diego, Calif., Griffin Schmit of Clarence Center, N.Y. and sophomore middle blocker Kevin Zhao of Edison, N.J.
Scouting Fort Wayne
The Mastadons have yet to drop a set in the 2018 season, entering the weekend with a 4-0 record and sweeping each opponent 3-0. Harvard will look to snap Fort Wayne's win streak after defeating them 3-1 at home last January. The Crimson has only played Fort Wayne three times in program history, tallying a 2-1 record. Sophomore Pelegrin Vargas leads the Mastadons attack thus far, registering 42 total kills and 3.50 kills per set.
Scouting Ball State
Harvard will face the 15th ranked Cardinals on the road for only the third time in program history, looking for its first win as the Crimson trails 0-2 in the all-time series. Ball State is off to a 2-2 start thus far in the 2018 season, posting shutout wins against Lees-McRae College and Emmanuel College. Sophomore setter Courtland Scharenborg has already accumulated 122 assists this weekend, averaging 9.38 per set and leading the team. The Cardinals will face Sacred Heart on Friday night, before hosting the Crimson for Saturday's match up.
Head coach Brian Baise enters his 10th season at the helm of the Harvard men's volleyball program this weekend. Baise owns a 112-96 record on the sidelines, including an 87-58 record over the past six seasons.
For six years straight, the Harvard men's volleyball team has received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. As one of 19 collegiate men's programs in the nation to earn the award, the team compiled for a top-five GPA among all men's programs.

The Crimson will travel to Bridgeport, Conn. to square off against Sacred Heart in its first conference match of the season on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.
Harvard is set for its home opener against Springfield on Monday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. on the Ivy League Network.
