Men’s Volleyball Welcomes Four Newcomers for the 2017 Season

– The Harvard men's volleyball team will welcome four freshmen to its roster for the 2017 season. They join a Crimson team that finished 2016 third in the EIVA regular season with a 9-6 mark and 13-11 overall, while advancing to the conference semi-finals for the fifth year in a row.

Setter Matthew Ctvrtlik comes to Harvard from Newport Beach, California, where he was recently featured in the June 2016 issue of Volleyball Magazine for being a four-time All-Tournament Team Selection at Junior Nationals. Ctvrtlik also led Corona del Mar to two regional titles. Middle blocker Martin Heavey recorded 1,000 career kills at Valley High School in Henderson, Nevada, and was named Conference Player of the Year and All-Division First Team. Chase Howard, who plays both libero and outside hitter, hails from Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he was the State Player of the Year and member of the USA Youth National Training Team. Outside hitter Erik Johnsson, meanwhile, led McQuaid Jesuit in Rochester, New York, to state titles in 2012 and 2015.

"We're excited to have such a multi-talented group coming in next year," stated head coach Brian Baise. "They are athletic and experienced and they all love to compete. It's a group that will make an impact on our program from the start, both on and off the court. We're looking forward to working with them in the years to come."

The group joins a squad that returns eight student-athletes, including All-EIVA second team selections Casey White and Marko Kostich.
