White Leads Men's Volleyball to Sweep of Stevens in Season Opener

The Crimson started the year off right with a sweep at Stevens (Gil Talbot).

HOBOKEN, N.J. – DJ White recorded 19 kills and finished the night with a .552 hitting percentage as the Harvard men's volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 win at Stevens Friday night in the team's 2013 opener. Harvard won by set scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-20.

White dominated the match with his 19-kill performance, committing just three errors on 29 attack attempts. He also notched three digs and two block assists as the Crimson (1-0) held Stevens (1-2) to a combined .169 hitting percentage.

Nick Madden and Caleb Zimmick added six kills apiece with Madden's eight digs and Zimmick's three total blocks leading the way. Rob Lothman dished out 35 assists as Harvard turned in a .348 hitting percentage.

The Crimson and Ducks traded points early in the first set until a 5-1 run opened a 16-13 edge for Harvard. A block by Branden Clemens and Zimmick moved the score to 18-14 before a kill by Madden put the set away, 25-20.

Madden and Clemens scored a pair of kills to help the Crimson to an 11-6 lead in the second stanza. Four more kills from Zimmick and White pushed Harvard's advantage to nine, 16-7, before White added three kills down the stretch for the 25-16 victory.

Harvard trailed 5-3 in the third set but a 6-2 stretch put the Crimson on top, 9-7. A block by Madden and Clemens pushed the margin to 13-9 and a kill by Zimmick made it a 19-13 affair. Stevens matched Harvard in the waning moments but the Crimson prevailed as Zimmick scored two kills in the final moments for a 25-10 win.

Harvard returns to action tomorrow, Jan. 19 when it faces NYU at 4 p.m. in New York City.
