CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—After trailing early in the match, the Harvard men's tennis team made a thrilling comeback to defeat Vanderbilt in a down-to-the wire 4-3 victory at the Murr Center Friday night. The Crimson improves to 2-2 (0-0 Ivy) and 5-1 in the all-time series against the Commodores.
Taking an early lead, the Commodores earned the doubles point with consecutive victories over the Crimson on courts one and three. No. 3 doubles team Billy Rowe and George Harwell clinched the point for Vanderbilt, taking down Steven Sun and Brian Shi, 6-3.
The Commodores continued their momentum, earning consecutive victories in the No. 6 and No. 3 spots to take an early 3-0 lead over the Crimson. Robert Wrzesinski struck first for the Crimson, securing the first point for Harvard with a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Maxwell Freeman in the No. 2 spot. Harris Walker quickly followed, taking down Vanderbilt's George Harwell in a three-setter (7-6, 2-6, 6-4) to cut the Commodores lead down to 3-2.
Senior Andy Zhou captured the match-tying point in No. 1 spot for the Crimson, taking down Cameron Klinger, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. First-year Steven Sun ultimately clinched the match for the Crimson in a three-set thriller, taking down Vanderbilt's Billy Rowe in the No. 5 position, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, to complete the Crimson comeback.
-Sophomore Robert Wrzesinski remains undefeated in singles play, extending his winning streak to 4-0 this season.
-Harvard improves to 5-1 in the all-time series over the Commodores.
The Crimson wraps up its three-match homestand on Feb. 2 with a doubleheader, hosting Penn State at 12 p.m. and Boston University at 7 p.m.
