Men's Tennis Set For ITA Regional Championships

Harvard men's tennis will send six student-athletes to the ITA Northeast Regionals, including co-captain Sebastian Beltrame (Dean Bauer)

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. 
– The Harvard men’s tennis team heads to Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania for the annual ITA Regional Championships, the penultimate event of the fall collegiate tennis season. The Northeast Regional will take place over six days (Oct. 20-25), with the tournament champions earning automatic entry into the ITA National Indoor Championships, held in Flushing, N.Y. in November.

Harvard at the ITA Regional Tournament
The Crimson will send six members of the team to the tournament, with five competing in the singles draw – co-captain Sebastian Beltrame, Grant Solomon, Kenny Tao, cop-captain Jean Thirouin, and Brian Yeung. In doubles competition, Michael Peters will pair with Yeung, while Beltrame and Thirouin as well as Tao and Solomon will team to face the field.

Draw
In singles play, Beltrame, Tao, Thirouin, and Yeung were all seeded and will receive a bye to the second round on Friday. Beltrame will face the winner of Hamza Laalej (Drexel)/Jan Cimrman (NJIT), Tao will take on the winner of Ryan Cheng (Yale)/qualifier, Thirouin faces off against Franz Luna (St. Francis)/qualifier, and Brian Yeung will face with winner of Ethan Nittolo (Buffalo)/qualifier.

Grant Solomon will play his opening match on Thursday against a qualifier. 

In doubles competition, Yeung/Peters earned a top seed and will have a bye into the second round. They will face the winner of Kazakov-Rimondini (Cornell)/Filipae-Pipoli (Monmouth) on Saturday. Beltrame/Thirouin will take on Foo-Kune/Luna (St. Francis) on Friday morning, while Tao/Solomon will face Hagermoser/Doehler (Yale) on Friday as well.

Schedule
Thursday, Oct. 20 – First round of qualifying singles at 8:00 a.m., followed by second and final round of qualifying singles in the afternoon.

Friday, Oct. 21 – First round of main draw doubles at 8:00 a.m. (top 8 seeds have byes), followed by first round of main draw singles (32 seeds have byes).

Saturday, Oct. 22 – Second round of main draw doubles at 8:00 a.m., followed by second and third round of main draw singles. One round of consolation singles will be played at 1:00 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 23 – Third round of main draw doubles at 9:00 a.m., followed by quarterfinals of main draw doubles. The fourth round of main draw singles will conclude the day.

Monday, Oct. 24 – Semifinals of main draw doubles at 9:00 a.m., followed by quarterfinals and semifinals of main draw singles.

Tuesday, Oct. 25 – Championships of main draw doubles at 9:00 a.m., followed by the finals of main draw singles.

The Last Time Out
In a final tune-up before the ITA Regional and National Championships, Harvard won eight of eight singles matches and three of four doubles matches against opponents from Boston University and Bryant in the Harvard Octoberfest Invitational. Sophomore Andy Zhou won the event, while junior Xavier Gonzalez earned runner-up honors. Gonzalez has won five of his last six singles matched this fall, while Zhou has won four of five.

In the Rankings
One Crimson doubles pair was ranked in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released on Sept. 13. Harvard’s top pair - Brian Yeung/Lucas Koelle came in at No. 46. Yeung, a second team All-Ivy League selection in doubles last season, posted a 14-14 overall record with a partner, including a 10-10 mark in dual action and a 3-3 tally in conference play. Yeung was .500 against nationally ranked opponents in doubles play.

Captains Elected
Harvard men’s tennis elected senior Sebastian Beltrame and junior Jean Thirouin as captains for the 2016-17 season. Beltrame and Thirouin, both ITA Scholar-Athletes, were regulars in the Crimson lineup last season.

Last Year
Harvard finished the 2015-16 season with a 16-11 record in dual match play, including a 10-4 mark at Murr Center. The Crimson narrowly missed a bid to the NCAA Tournament, notching a 5-6 record against teams ranked in the top 40 of the ITA rankings.

Meet the Freshmen
Harvard’s four-man freshman class was ranked No. 7 in the nation by TennisRecruiting.net. Lucas Koelle (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Laurel Springs), Galen Lee (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah), Lane Leschly (Atherton, Calif./Menlo), and Logan Weber (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) make up the Harvard men’s tennis class of 2020.  

On the Sidelines
David Fish, the Scott Mead ‘77 Family Head Coach for Harvard Men’s Tennis, enters his 41st season with the Crimson after coaching the men’s tennis team to an 16-11 record last season. Fish owns an all-time dual record of 666-304-1 and has led the Crimson to a top-40 finish in four of the last five seasons.

Harvard will compete at the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga., beginning on Nov. 3 and may have select members competing at the ITA National Indoor Championships, which begin on the same date in Flushing, N.Y..
